Kenya Safari Circuit: Amboseli, Masai Mara, and Beyond
The classic Kenya safari circuit combines Amboseli National Park (elephants and Kilimanjaro), the Masai Mara National Reserve (Big Five and the Great Migration), and optionally Samburu National Reserve (rare northern species) or Lake Nakuru (flamingos and rhino) — connected by charter flights that make the distances manageable and the landscape transitions dramatic. A 10-day Kenya circuit covering Amboseli and the Masai Mara is the most popular itinerary for first-time Kenya visitors; a 14-day circuit adds Samburu for Kenya’s complete wildlife diversity.
What Is the Kenya Safari Circuit?
Kenya’s safari destinations are spread across the country — Amboseli in the south near the Tanzanian border, the Masai Mara in the southwest, Samburu in the north, and Tsavo in the southeast. Connecting them by road is possible but time-consuming (the Nairobi–Masai Mara road can take 5–6 hours). Charter flights between destinations take 40–60 minutes and transform the circuit into a seamless, efficient safari — you spend time in the bush, not on the road.
The Classic 10-Day Kenya Circuit: Amboseli + Masai Mara
Days 1–2: Nairobi
Arrive JKIA. Transfer to Nairobi hotel or safari lodge (Giraffe Centre, Nairobi National Park, or city hotel). Optional: Nairobi National Park morning game drive — the only national park in the world within a capital city. Transfer to Wilson Airport for charter flight to Amboseli.
Days 3–5: Amboseli National Park (3 nights)
Three nights in Amboseli — ideally at Tawi Lodge, Tortilis Camp, or Ol Tukai. Twice-daily game drives with dedicated ranger. Dawn drives timed for the Kilimanjaro elephant shot. Afternoon drives for cheetah, lion, and general wildlife. Walking on the community conservancy land (with appropriate lodge). Full immersion in the Amboseli elephant world — rangers with Amboseli Trust knowledge of individual animals transform the experience.
Days 6–9: Masai Mara National Reserve (4 nights)
Charter flight from Amboseli to Masai Mara (approximately 1 hour). The Mara receives the same wildlife populations from the Serengeti ecosystem: 1.5 million wildebeest (July–October), resident lion prides, cheetah in open savanna, elephant, leopard in riverine vegetation, and hippo in the Mara River. Four nights allows comprehensive coverage of the Mara ecosystem — including the famous Marsh area for lion, the river crossing area (July–October), and the private conservancies around the park’s boundary for more exclusive access.
Day 10: Return to Nairobi → International Departure
Charter flight back to Nairobi (40–55 minutes). Transfer to JKIA for international departure. Or: add an optional Kenyan coast extension — Diani Beach or Lamu — for 3–4 nights of beach relaxation after the safari.
14-Day Kenya Circuit: Adding Samburu
Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya adds species not found in southern Kenya: the “Samburu Special Five” — reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, and gerenuk (the long-necked antelope that stands on its hind legs to browse). A 14-day itinerary:
- Days 1–2: Nairobi
- Days 3–4: Samburu (2 nights) — charter from Wilson Airport, 45 minutes
- Days 5–7: Amboseli (3 nights) — charter Samburu to Amboseli, approximately 1.5 hours
- Days 8–12: Masai Mara (5 nights) — charter Amboseli to Mara, approximately 1 hour
- Day 13: Return to Nairobi — optional coast extension
- Day 14: International departure
Best Time for the Kenya Circuit
- July–October: Peak season — the Great Wildebeest Migration is in the Masai Mara; Amboseli is clear and dry; Samburu is dry and wildlife-rich. The single best period for a first Kenya safari.
- January–February: Short dry season — excellent conditions across all three reserves; quieter and cheaper than peak. Wildebeest are in the Serengeti during this period (not in the Mara).
- June: Transition — conditions improving, migration building in the Mara. An excellent value month before peak season pricing kicks in.
